Letter from General Mills proves they support censorship

OML has gotten a letter from General Mills Cereal Company after sending a letter concerning the sponsorship of the NBC show Dog Eat Dog.

After we had sent the letter to the targeted sponsors of the show, we got a letter back from the cereal maker. The content is both shocking and almost unreal:

"One Million Dads/One Million Moms" forwarded your recent e-mail about our advertising placements and policies to General Mills.

As you may know, General Mills has long had a policy of airing advertising only on programs that are in line with the family-oriented nature of our products.

As much as possible, we review programs to fit our family-oriented profile before spots air, often making determinations on an episode-by-episode basis. While it is not always possible to determine the content of a program prior to air, it is not uncommon for General Mills to pull advertising on a specific episode of a generally approved series if we believe the content may be objectionable to consumers. In several instances, we have discontinued advertising altogether on programs or series that are not in line with our family-oriented profile.

In part because of our strong policies in this regard, General Mills was recently deemed the second most supportive company of family-friendly programming by the Parents Television Council.

Thank you for contacting General Mills to share your views on this matter. You have our assurance that General Mills will continue to be supportive of family-friendly television programming.

General Mills Consumer Services

The message is clear: General Mills supports censorship.

It is time that we all take a stand and tell General Mills that we will not sit and allow for them to help in the censorship of America. We can make the difference.

We have said that we would not organize a boycott of any product. However, it seems as if it will take just that to get General Mills to listen to us. If they want to force us to do something that we said we would not organize, then we will show to them that we will not take this lying down.

Thus, we will ask of you to send a letter specifically to General Mills, asking them to why they would support such censorship. The letter is below.

Here is a product list of some of the many products that General Mills makes:

  • Big G Cereals
  • Betty Crocker
  • Yoplait - Colombo
  • Pillsbury
  • Bugels
  • Pop-Secret
  • Small Planet Foods
  • Cascading Farm
  • Muir Glen
  • Gardetto's
